YouTube ad types on plain English
Skippable in-stream ads are ads that let you skip them after watching for 5 seconds. They are known to appear before the video, but they can be shown during or after the video also. Video discovery ads are thumbnails of your video that can show up on YouTube search results, alongside related YouTube videos or on the YouTube mobile homepage. Since the purpose of these ads is to invite viewers of some video to watch your video ad, you will be charged only when they choose to watch it by clicking the thumbnail.
Outstream ads mobile-only (phones and tablet devices) video ads that play on partner websites and within apps. These are those “tap to unmute” ads. Advertisers are only charged when more than half of the ad screen space is shown for two seconds or more.
Bumper ads last 6 seconds or shorter and play before, during, or after another video. Viewers do not have the option to skip the ad. YouTube describes these ads as a way to reach your audience with a short, memorable message. You pay each time your ad is shown 1,000 times.
YouTube Masthead ads are kind of an exclusive feature of YouTube advertising. You can only get them by reservation, through a Google sales representative. They show up on YouTube homepage. A featured video in a Masthead autoplays without the sound for up to 30 seconds at the top of the YouTube Home feed. The Masthead can appear in a widescreen or 16:9 aspect ratio format and includes an information panel to the right that automatically uses assets from your channel. You can optionally include up to 2 companion videos in this panel. People can click the mute icon if they want to hear sound from the video.
How much advertising on YouTube really costs?
We really don’t want to say that it depends, but we have to. It depends on the videos you want to target for your ads to show up. Also, it depends on how much are viewers clicking on your ad. It even depends on your ad’s quality.
